4 Natural Ways Of Preventing Infection And Cleansing Vagina

The vagina is a tube of muscle inside a woman’s body that runs from the cervix (the opening of the womb) to the vaginal opening.

It is one part of the body that women treasure so well, but some of them do not know how to take good care of it.

We cannot determine the amount of ladies who love their men to go down to the vagina region during sexual affair.

But we know that a repulsive odour could make the man avoid that area like it is a taboo.

It is sad to hear stories of oral sex, if you are the type that desire it, yet you do not know what it feels like.

You could just be the reason you are not getting it.

Vagina Keeps Itself Clean

Taking care of the vagina is a lady’s burden to carry.

But how well she does that largely determines how comfortable her man feels during sexual intercourse.

The vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions (discharge).

Yes! Discharge.

It is not every discharge that a lady has that is a sign of an infection.

Concern should only be raised when the discharge produces an odour that is offensive.

One way to ensure that the vagina is in shape is to maintain an everyday healthy lifestyle.

Dr Suzy Elneil, consultant in urogynaecology at University College Hospital, London, and spokesperson for Wellbeing of Women said: “Generally, good vaginal health is maintained by making sure you’re in good general health”.

“This includes a healthy diet and exercise.

“Normal exercise helps maintain good vaginal function, as walking and running helps the pelvic floor to tone up and ensure good general health.”

Coming back to secretions (discharge) from the vagina, it is important to highlight that it is normal to produce clear or white secretions (discharge) from your vagina.

This mucus is produced naturally from the neck of the womb, known as the cervix.

However, to prevent infection and keep the vagina healthy a few things must be done.

1.     Protect Good Bacteria In The Vagina

Keeping the vagina in good health begins with having good bacteria there.

Bacteria could make the vagina discharge offensive, but the presence of good bacteria also protects it.

According to Professor Ronnie Lamont, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists,”the vagina contains more bacteria than anywhere else in the body after the bowel, but the bacteria are there for a reason.”

The NHS in an article listed the functions of the good bacteria inside the vagina to include:

  • provide “numerical dominance” – they outnumber other potential harmful bacteria that might enter the vagina
  • help keep the vagina’s pH balance (how acidic the vagina is) at an even level, which helps keep the balance of bacteria healthy
  • can produce bacteriocins (naturally occurring antibiotics) to reduce or kill other bacteria entering the vagina
  • produce a substance that stops invading bacteria sticking to the vagina walls to invade the tissues

When the balance of bacteria is disturbed, there is a tendency that infection and inflammation could occur.

Bacteria called lactobacilli help keep the vagina’s pH balance at its normal low level (less than pH 4.5).

This also prevents the growth of other organisms.

If the pH of the vagina increases (it gets less acidic), the quality or amount of lactobacilli can fall and other bacteria can multiply.

This can result in infections such as bacterial vaginosis or thrush, which can cause symptoms including itching, irritation and abnormal discharge (the kind that has ordour.

One way to ensure the good bacteria stays in the vagina is to avoid washing your undies with chemical-based soaps or bleach that leave harmful residue in your undies.

2. Washing Your Vagina

Washing the vagina is something that every lady does, but not many knows the right way to wash it.

Sadly, some use perfumed soaps, gels and antiseptics to was their vagina, but experts have emphasised that these can affect the healthy balance of bacteria and pH levels in the vagina and cause irritation.

To keep it clean, it is very okay to use plain, unperfumed soaps to wash the area around the vagina (the vulva) gently every day.

The vagina will clean itself inside your body with natural vaginal secretions (discharge).

3. Practice Safe Sex

According to research reports, some bacteria and viruses can get into the vagina during sex.

These include the bugs that cause chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, genital warts, syphilis and HIV.

You can protect your vagina against these infections by using a condom every time you have sex.

4.    Tea Tree Oil Solution

One essential oil that some persons have found helpful when they are encountering infection is Tea Tree Oil.

A study by NCBI highlighted a few great things about the Tea Tree Oil (TTO).

“Contemporary data clearly show that the broad-spectrum activity of TTO includes antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiprotozoal activities.”

But also stressed that not all of the activity has been characterised well in vitro.

“The few cases where clinical work has been done, data are promising but thus far inadequate,”

“A wealth of in vitro data now supports the long-held beliefs that TTO has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.”

Another component in this fruit that also helps in cleansing is Tannins.

This are water-soluble polyphenols that are commonly found in higher herbaceous and woody plants.

Tannic acid is present in many foods including tea, cocoa beans, grapes, strawberry and persimmon.

This acid is also categorized as a ‘generally recognized as safe’ (GRAS) food additive

A study showed that Tannic acid may be a useful adjuvant agent for the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus, skin infections in addition to β-lactam antibiotics which is helpful in the treatment of bacteria too.
