in the beginning of a new year

Things You Don’t Know About The Beginning Of A New Year

It is the beginning of a New Year and a lot will be going through your mind. For some, the previous year was one full of memories, with the unpalatable dominating.

To yet others, there is this sudden feeling of depression they feel when they see goals that were not met.

A New Year is full of a lot for different people, but are there things that should be basic in the first week and month of the year?

Are we talking about resolutions here? Not really and that is because people make resolutions that do not last.

Over the years, those who fail to actualise their resolutions have abandoned the idea of a New Year Resolution. Now they rely on time and chance.

Well, there is more to a New Year that you should know.

1.      Why Does The Year Really End In December?

You see, you may not even know that December is originally not the end of the year.

December got its name from the Latin word decem (meaning ten). This is so because it was originally the tenth month of the year in the calendar of Romulus c. 750 BC  which began in March (1).

December initially had 29 days.

In 154 BCE, a rebellion forced the Roman senate to change the beginning of the civil year from March to January 1. With this reform, December officially became the twelfth month in the year 153 BCE.

In the year 46 BCE, Julius Caesar introduced a new calendar system—the Julian calendar. He added ten days to the year and introduced the leap day. In the new Julian calendar, December was expanded to 31 days (2).

2.     The Good Way To Enter A New Year

Since we all look forward to December and January 1, being intentional about this meeting point for the end and beginning is necessary.

This is one reason people put their New Year Resolution together at the beginning of a new year.

Unfortunately, these resolutions do not last long and that is mostly because they are not anchored on a solid ground.

Your resolution should be based on what you truly believe in. One of the things that has worked for people who are Christians is checking through the scriptures. They draw their resolutions from the word of God.

One part of the scriptures that we will share with you about a new year or new beginning is Deuteronomy 14:24-27 (1).

The children of Israel were asked to keep their tithes and spend it once they get into the promised land.

Here, God showed the essence of having a good mentality, as you enter a New Year. If you will enjoy the milk and honey in the land, you will first behave like someone who is wealthy. That will raise your thinking capacity to the higher level that wealthy people operate in.

Some times, you allow what you faced in a previous year affect your mentality at the beginning of a new year.

This is one of the reasons a person may fail to actualise the resolutions put together for the New Year.

What mentality are you entering the year with? Think of results, not problems, for as you think you become.

If your mind dwells on the problems of the previous year, much of the New Year would carry problem in it.

3.      Give And Get As Much Compliments As You Can

Here is one thing the New Year could do for you. When you give compliments there is something unique it does to the giver and receiver.

Compliments whip up a feeling of fulfilment and confidence and this is one of the reasons you should give more and get more.

Basically, when you compliment a person, you and the receiver will receive a boost in serotonin. This promotes positive mood and a positive mood within the normal range is an important predictor of health and longevity (2).

Take good advantage of the positive vibes that the compliments create in your mind and plan ahead of the year.

Planning is necessary for you to be able to meet the demands and goals that you set.

4.      Make Your Health A Priority

You see, in December, people throw caution in the wind and jump on anything edible that they can find.

Unfortunately, that is an unhealthy habit that come hurting their health.

Making your health a priority is a ‘going concern’ for everyone. Those who are at that level with their health often know that they should not embrace unhealthy eating or habits simply because it is a festive season.

Form a good habit of eating right all the time, no matter what season it is.

Find out what is suitable for your age and your health as an adult and do them. It could appear like a difficult task, but with practice a student who does not know what button to touch to fly a plane, suddenly becomes a person who can confidently take off from a country and head to another country he has not visited before.

5.     Make A Vision Board At The Beginning Of A New Year

Again, this is one aspect of life that people do not take with so much seriousness.

There are few scriptures hat we will look at here to explain the essence of having a vision board.

In Habakkuk 2:2 God, Himself, instructs that we write the vison and make it plain on tablets that he may run that reads (3).

This is the essence of having a mental picture of your dreams and also having it at sight always.

Basically, a vision board will help you create the right mentality necessary for the actualisation of your dream.

Jacob in Genesis 30:30-33 highlights the extent what you see consistently could do to creating the reality (4).

If you put the vision always in sight, your mind will help you create everything that will make it come to reality.

Get pictures that give you a vivid sight of what your dream is and place them where you will see them always.

Do not worry about how you will meet them, but focus on doing the things you have to do to meet them.

With time, you will see that they will materialise. Even though it takes time, stay on it and will surely come.
