Menstruation Without Ovulation: How Possible? Causes, Treatment

Menstruation is one thing that most women look at to say they are ovulating. But is it possible for menstruation to happen without ovulation?

Studies say it is possible and there is a reason for it.

When there is lack of ovulation in a menstrual circle, a woman is said to be having anovulation cycle.

There are different reasons this could happen.

Ordinarily, every woman sees her menstrual cycle as a sign that the unfertilised egg is dropping off.

But with anovulation , that is not the case. This condition poses grave danger to a woman’s fertility.

According to a study, disorders of anovulation account for about 30% of infertility and often present with irregular periods (oligomenorrhoea) or an absence of periods (amenorrhoea) (1).

Causes Of Menstruation Without Ovulation

This condition is common with:

a) Women who are close to menopause. A woman that is between 40 and 50 years is more prone to having menstruation without ovulation.

They often experience changes to their hormones that could make blood flow happen without ovulation.

b) The second group of persons prone to anovulation are girls that just started menstruating.

This is because of the change that their body and hormones are undergoing.

c)  Women who are higher than their ideal weight or underweight are also susceptible to this condition.

d)  High stress level can also make a woman have hormonal imbalance that could result in menstruation without ovulation.

e)  A woman’s eating habit can also expose her to this condition.

f)  When a woman engages in extreme exercise habits it could result in anovulation.

Basically, bleeding happens as a result of imbalance between estrogens and progestins.

Here Is A Simple Way To Know Your Ideal Weight

This imbalance results in alterations in endometrial vascular homeostasis and leads to irregular bleeding.

This is known as Benign Endometrium (2)

When the bleeding happens, the excess lining in the uterus, as a result of the imbalance, comes off as period flow.

Diagnosis Of Anovulation

To know if you have anovulation, it is important that you visit your doctor.

The doctor may perform an ultrasound. Here he takes a look at the uterus and ovaries.

He may also check your progesterone levels and the lining of your uterus.

The doctor may also request blood sample to check for the presence of certain antibodies.

Treatment For Menstruation Without Ovulation

Fortunately, this condition is treatable. However, the kind of treatment that your doctor will recommend will depend on the cause of the condition.

Your doctor may recommend lifestyle modification in terms of your diet. Another modification you may adopt is your exercise routine. Moderation is key.

Food that would trigger imbalance of hormones that will lead to the condition should not be in your diet.

As much as possible, a reduction in stress level will have a positive impact on your reproductive health.

Also, there may be need to lose some kilogram if you are above your ideal weight.

If you are underweight, you should eat natural foods that would help you gain weight.

The truth is that with a good hormone balance a woman’s reproductive system is more prepared for conception.
