Does Multivitamin Improve Memory? See What Researchers Found

When you take multivitamin, what often forms the reason you do that? An amazing health; right?

Basically, most persons want some form of assurance that their immune system is reinforced to take charge and ward off ailments.

A few others think they are not getting enough of a particular vitamin from their diets and they need to supplement.

It is a bit unusual for you to imagine that your brain may be the one benefiting from that multivitamin you take.

You read the leaflet in the pack of the multivitamin and it promises so much. This gives you one reason to try it out.



You see, the use of multivitamin is not new.

For instance, people in the United States have taken multi-vitamin/mineral (MVM) and multivitamin (MV) dietary supplements since the early 1940s.

That was when the first of such products became available (1).

Different studies have identified the health benefits of multivitamins. However, recently, a study concluded that they do not protect healthy adults lacking some nutrients from having heart diseases (2).

But on the flip side, a study that tested whether a commercial multivitamin-mineral (MVM) could improve brain function (cognition) in older women and men found something interesting.

The study published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, had 2,262 participants with a mean age of 73.

You see, for years, down the line, the only things we have, as brain boosting options are regular exercise, maintaining ideal weight and eating a healthy diet.



Basically, this options can exert amazing power on your cardiovascular health.

The new study found that daily multivitamin supplementation resulted in a statistically significant benefit on global cognition by 95%.

According to the study, the participants received the multivitamin for a period of 3 years.

It was a randomised, double-blind trial, which is considered the most powerful study design.

The study says the significant effect was most pronounced in participants with a history of cardiovascular disease (3).

Also multivitamin-mineral benefits were observed for memory and executive function.

The multivitamin chosen for this study was Centrum Silver. This contains 27 vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in various amounts.

According to the researchers’ estimate, three years of multivitamin use could slow age-related decline in brain function by as much as 60%.

Notably, study participants were mostly white (89%) and more than half were female (60%).

Taking Multivitamins? What You Should Know

While this is a commendable finding, experts suggest that it does not mean people of all ages should use multivitamins.



In fact. it could be that this effect was as a result of some form of deficiencies in some nutrients among the study participants.

On the other hand, there is an earlier study that concluded there was no improvement of brain function among male physicians of ages 65 and older taking multivitamins (4).

That said, we cannot also rule out the result of this latest study. It highlights the tendencies that multivitamin could be helpful for people of older age.
