Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) could cause infertility. It triggers hormonal imbalance that interferes with the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries.

According to researchers from the University of Tel Aviv, women with PCOS who control insulin levels – by increasing calories at breakfast and decreasing them at dinner – can improve their fertility.

Here, a large morning meal could mean taking as much as 900 calories or slightly more in the morning.

The lead researcher in that study, Professor Daniela Jakubowicz, highlights that most women with PCOS are typically “insulin resistant”.

This means that their bodies produce too much insulin, which eventually goes to the ovaries and prompts the production of testosterone, decreasing fertility.

Unfortunately, some women who have PCOS are not overweight. Stress, lifestyle and other variables could be the reason for the hormonal imbalance.

According to the study, 60 women with PCOS and a normal body mass index (BMI) were assigned randomly to one of two groups.

The first group, big breakfast group, receives a 980 calorie breakfast, 640 calorie lunch and a 190 calorie dinner

Also, the second group, big dinner group, consumed a 190 calorie breakfast, 640 calorie lunch and a 980 calorie dinner. Just a reversal of the breakfast and dinner figures.

Basically, the two groups consumed a total of 1,800 calories each day.

The researches tested them for 90 days for insulin, glucose and testosterone levels.

Their ovulation and menstruation information were also analysed.

Importance Of The Large breakfast Findings

Results showed that though neither group experienced a change in BMI, the big dinner group still had high levels of insulin and testosterone.

Interestingly, the group with the big breakfast showed 56% less insulin resistance, as well as a 50% fall in testosterone levels.

As a result of this drop, the ovulation rate rose by 50%.

According to Professor Jakubowicz, eating more in the morning and less in the evening follows your body’s 24-hour metabolic cycle.

The diet is not about “weight loss but insulin management,” she says.

Also, women with PCOS, who are not trying to get pregnant, can explore this diet to get relief from “other symptoms that go with the disorder”.

A reduction in testosterone (a hormone that is supposed to be more prominent in a male human) results in reduction in unwanted body hair, oily hair, hair loss and acne.

Also, persons that are at risk of developing diabetes could explore this breakfast pattern.

The researchers say the early morning meal could prevent the development of type-2 diabetes.
