How Long Should I Try For Pregnancy Before I See A Doctor?

Every now and then, we see people who try for pregnancy wait for too long before they see a doctor.

For a couple, especially for the woman, time is of essence and this requires that the couple consider an adage in Nigeria’s Igbo speaking region that admonishes people to “chase a black goat in before it gets dark”. In the dark, it becomes more difficult to find the goat.

This is true for women who are above 35.

Unfortunately, we will still have ladies who marry at an age that is close to 35 and that requires that they begin early to seek solution.

So, how early should a couple (woman close to 35) begin to seek medical solution, as they try for pregnancy.

Typically, it’s recommended to try for pregnancy naturally for about one year before seeking medical advice. But that is if you’re under the age of 35 and have regular, unprotected sex.

However, there are some situations where it might be appropriate to see a doctor sooner.

Here are a few reasons you should go for a test and examination earlier if you are trying to conceive.

1.  Age Factor And Pregnancy

If you’re over the age of 35, it’s generally advised to seek medical advice after six months of trying to conceive, as fertility declines with age.

From 35, the decline becomes even faster and that requires that you act fast.

2.  Irregular Menstrual Cycles

If you have irregular menstrual cycles, it may be more challenging to pinpoint your fertile window (1).

In such cases, it’s advisable to consult a doctor sooner rather than later.

3.  Known Fertility Issues

If you or your partner have a known medical condition that could affect fertility, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or a history of reproductive issues, it’s wise to seek medical advice early on.

4.  Previous Miscarriages

Basically, if you’ve experienced recurrent miscarriages or have had difficulty carrying a pregnancy to term in the past, it’s essential to consult a doctor before attempting to conceive again.

5.  Lifestyle Factors

Also, if you or your partner have lifestyle factors that could impact fertility, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, or exposure to environmental toxins, it’s advisable to seek medical advice sooner rather than later to address these issues.

6.  Concerns About Fertility

If you have concerns about your fertility or are experiencing symptoms that could indicate an underlying issue, such as pelvic pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding, it’s best to consult a doctor promptly.

Bottom Line

In any case, if you have been trying to conceive for an extended period without success or have concerns about your fertility, it’s essential to seek guidance from a healthcare professional.

Most importantly, they can perform tests to assess fertility. this will help identify any underlying issues, and provide personalised advice and treatment options to help you achieve a healthy pregnancy.
