Does Castor Seed Lower Blood Pressure? What We Found

Castor seed or castor oil is primarily known for its use as a laxative, working as a medicine for the treatment of constipation, and then as contraceptive. But whether castor seed could lower blood pressure is another question springing up.

The presence of ricin in the bean or castor seed is a compound that makes it effective even as a contraceptive.

Indeed, there’s limited scientific evidence to support the claim that castor seeds or castor oil directly lower blood pressure.

It’s essential to note that the effects of castor seeds on blood pressure are not well-established. Also, any potential impact may be indirect or not widely recognised within mainstream medical practices.

However, we found a study that indicated an effect of ingested castor seed on blood pressure. Although not directly linked.

In 2008, a study of the toxicity of castor seed, indicated an effect on blood pressure.

Side Effect Of Castor Seed Ricin Toxicity

Although, there could be other reasons the blood pressure of the individual dropped. It occurred within the period he ingested castor seeds.

The study says “a 51 year-old Omani man, neither diabetic nor hypertensive and not on any regular medication, was brought to the Accident & Emergency Department of Nizwa Hospital, Oman, by his son.

“He was in a confused state after ingesting three hours previously one green fruit of castor bean, as stated by the son. He had vomited once at home.

“There were no other complaints.

“On examination the patient was confused, disoriented as to time and place, and was afebrile. His pulse was 108/min regular, blood pressure was 110/68 mmHg and the respiratory rate was 22 per minute” (1).

This indicates that ingesting (yet to mature) green castor seeds could increase risk of having a lowered blood pressure, but that is when there is ricin toxicity.

Ricin Toxicity

Meanwhile, the seed is only toxic if the outer shell is broken or chewed.

Also, ricin is contained in the bean pulp following the separation of the oil from the beans.

No ricin is thought to remain in the oil, and it is inactivated during extraction if done under heated conditions.

But if you are considering using castor oil or castor seeds for any health-related purpose, including potential effects on blood pressure, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional.

They can provide personalised advice based on your individual health status, medications you may be taking, and other relevant factors.

High blood pressure is a serious medical condition that requires careful management, typically involving lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication.
