Pineapple peel juice health benefits

Why You Should Not Throw Pineapple Peel Away

How many times have your thrown pineapple peel away? Most people often throw it away as waste, but of a truth nothing is actually a waste.

Pineapple peel is something that you should save every time you peel your pineapple. How we save ours is just by tying them up in a nylon and putting them in a refrigerator.

However, this is necessary if you are not preparing it for use immediately.

Most times we have recommended the juice to our clients who complain of stress.

Basically, our decision to recommend pineapple peel juice is not borne out of a self decision, but out of a research that we carried out on it.

Oxidative Stress

In the course of studying the health benefits of this peel, we found a 2011 study that highlighted that pineapple peel juice can help address oxidative stress.

“Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This imbalance could lead to cell and tissue damage.

Sadly, “oxidative stress occurs naturally and plays a role in the aging process.”

However, there are other things that increases the risk of long-term oxidative stress. You should avoid them.

  • Alcohol consumption
  • Certain medications
  • Pollution and this is one is common in Nigeria’s populated cities
  • Exposure to pesticides or industrial chemicals
  • Obesity and this is having a Body Mass Index that is higher than normal
  • Diets high in fat, sugar, and processed foods
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products

Exposure to these factors for a long period of time could result in long-term cell damage.

Interestingly, the 2011 research highlighted that pineapple peel is rich in antioxidants – flavonoids, vitamin A and C.

It also stated that the peels are well known ingredients in ethnomedicine.

“Traditionally they are used in the treatment and management of various ailments such as malaria and typhoid.”

Antioxidants Activity

Additionally, “Correia et al established a relationship between antioxidant activity, β-glucosidase and total phenolic content in pineapple peel/soy flour extracts”.

According to the 2011 study, pineapple peel extract may carry out these antioxidant activities by one or the following mechanisms:

  • Scavenging free radicals
  • Interaction with oxidative cascade and preventing its outcome
  • Singlet oxygen quenching
  • Inhibition of oxidative enzymes and activation of antioxidant enzymes
  • Metal chelating – a way of bonding of ions and molecules to metal ions.

Other Health Benefits

Because pineapple peel contains vitamin  C it also has other health benefits.

The juice could help reduce risk of chronic disease, one of them, cancers.

Also, it can help in the management of high blood pressure and lowers the risk of heart disease.

Its antioxidants may also reduce blood uric acid levels and help prevent gout attacks.
